CID full form

The CID full form is Crime Investigation Department. It is the intelligence and investigation wing of the Indian State Police Force. The cid full form is one of the most important branches of the police organization. It has the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) as its head which is considered as one of the most popular careers when it comes to the field of criminal justice.

The CID has several branches from state to state. These include:

On the recommendation of the Police Commission, the CID was formed by the British government in 1902 to maintain law and order in the country. It has its headquarters in Pune and is tasked to investigate specific cases by the Government of India and the DGP (Director General of Police). However, in 1929, the department got split into the Special Branch, CID, and Crime Branch CID (CB-CID)

CID officers usually use the word “detective” before their rank or position. The CID officers are categorized in multiple grades like Sub- Inspectors, Superintendents, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Inspectors, and Inspector-General of Polices (IGP).

Functions of CID 

The CID full form or Crime Investigation Department has the following duties: 

  • First, registration and investigation of the cases. Second, the detection and prosecution of specified groups of cases assigned to them by the Government and DGP. 
  • Conducting inquiries as per the procedure. 
  • Also, using the crime analysis to improve law and order in the society and to prevent, detect, investigate and prosecute criminal cases. 
  • Timely submitting reports to government agencies. 
  • Efficient, professional, and independent functioning of SCRB (State Crimes Record Bureau), FPB (Finger Print Bureau), and their modernization
  • CID officers are tasked to process evidence at the crime scene.

Eligibility Criteria To Become A CID officer 

After becoming aware of CID full form, here are some of the must-have criteria(s) to be a CID officer: 

  • Applicants must be a citizen of India.
  • Entrance Indian Civil Service Exams held by Union Public Service Commission must be cleared.
  • Both male and female candidates can apply.
  • Minimum Age:20
  • Maximum Age:27

Educational Qualifications-

  • A candidate must have graduated in any stream from a recognized university
  • A candidate who is already a graduate can join the department as a sub-inspector
  • Many universities offer a degree in criminology that the candidate/s can avail to get help in joining CID.

Selection Process

Like other government exams, there are 3 main exams for CID. after clearing all these exams can a candidate be eligible for CID Officer.
